I attended the press screening of David Michôd’s Animal Kingdom a couple months back and I still cannot get this film out of my head. Now on the eve of it’s state-side release (Aug. 13) I’ve decided to write how natural cool it is.
The quiet horror of the film is introduced as ‘J’ Cody (played by newbie James Frecheville) dispassionately watches a game of Jeopardy next to his dead, heroin overdosed mother. After moving in with his estranged uncles and grandmother, Fenchville’s emotionless acting is surprisingly fitting for his role as an unaffected youth surrounded by the savagery, bloodthirstiness, and ferocity of his new family.
Fed by a deceptive and protective matriarch, Jacki Weaver, and led by the barbaric and disturbed patriarch, Ben Mendelsohn, our minds wrestle as to identify the source of this family’s malevolence.
Overall: GO SEE IT. TWO COOLS UP
